This is a section of silk for a broomstick skirt I'm making for the 2014 SPIN Silk Painting Conference Fashion Show in Santa FE. This bi-annual conference is a bee-hive of silk painting and a wonderful experience both as student and instructor. I will be teaching with Barbara Matthews this year, a class in surface design techniques for coloring silk that will include silk painting with and without gutta, shibori, breakdown printing, and a variety of additional techniques for treating backgrounds employing soy wax, cold wax, salt and a variety of sprays. In this class we will all be working on the same focal design pattern and will leave the further dyework design to each student. Demos of the above-mentioned different techniques will be held on the first morning. This is a two day class so we are really hoping to accomplish a lot. Typically, silk painters are very hard workers, so I'm fairly certain they will get a lot done and be able to finish what isn't completed at home. Wish us luck!!! I am excited to be teaching again at SPIN (taught shibori last time with Linda Walters). But this is a very ambitious agenda so I am biting my psychological nails!!!!!
